The Sydney Marathon 2025 was a landmark moment for our Against Breast Cancer charity runners. For some, it was their first marathon or a unique way to celebrate a birthday. For others, it was the final step in the pursuit of the seven World Marathon Majors. But for everyone, it was an emotional and deeply personal journey, one that honoured loved ones, raised vital funds for breast cancer research and celebrated resilience.
Completing the Seventh World Major
Having already conquered the six World Marathon Majors, Colin was thrilled to take on Sydney as the newly announced seventh major for 2025. Running in memory of his mum, Irene, who passed away 31 years ago from secondary breast cancer, the race held profound meaning.
Although initially worried about raising the pledge, the support he received was overwhelming, with many supporters sharing their own stories. Together, they raised nearly £3,300.
The marathon experience was unforgettable, crossing the Harbour Bridge at sunrise, seeing his wife Louise cheering six times along the course, and finishing by the Opera House. Despite Sydney’s hills, he clocked a strong 3h35m11s, officially joining a select group of just over 4,000 runners worldwide who have completed all seven majors (including only 230 from the UK), he reflected:
“Running over the Harbour Bridge to the Opera House is iconic, but raising almost £3,300 for Against Breast Cancer research makes this truly heroic.”
A First Marathon from the Heart
For James, Sydney was a debut marathon and a deeply personal one. He ran in memory of his mother, who sadly passed away from breast cancer in 2023.
“Choosing to run for ABC gave the event extra meaning and made the entire day unforgettable.”
“Everything clicked into place on race day, the atmosphere, the volunteers, the incredible crowd support, and the scenic course.” Crossing the finish line in an outstanding 3h13m, James described the moment as surreal. “Everything kind of just froze and I realised what I’d accomplished and who I did it for.”
Running with Purpose
When Mads’s wife, a researcher in cancer survivorship and psychological health, was invited to the University of Sydney, the timing lined up perfectly with the marathon. With just two weeks’ notice, he decided to join the race and run for ABC, giving his trip an “anti-cancer purpose.”
Though underprepared, Mads drew on his regular running base and mental strength to push through. The race was a balance of resilience and strategy, with the highlight being the emotional finish in front of the Opera House, family waiting proudly.
“A marathon is not just a long run. It’s about preservation and resilience. Sydney Marathon was special to me, and it was an honour supporting ABC.”
Running for a Best Friend
For Lutie, the lead-up to Sydney was anything but smooth, battling flu and an injury in the weeks before the race. But determination carried her through. She ran every mile for her best friend, who is bravely facing cancer.
Crossing the line in 3h19m, Lutie’s achievement was about far more than the time. Her efforts raised nearly £2,500 for ABC’s life-saving research.
“You feel helpless when your best friend is going through hell and back, but I’m glad I was able to help in some way.”
With Sydney complete, Lutie now has six marathon stars, with just one major to go.
A Birthday to Remember
For Chilelu, marathon day was also a birthday celebration, one he’ll never forget. Running for ABC and raising money for breast cancer research gave his special day an even deeper purpose.
Crossing the finish line by the Opera House, cheered on by the crowd, made for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Every mile and every donation contributed to a meaningful cause, creating birthday memories that will last forever.
Running for a Cause That Matters
Running for ABC was the perfect cause as cancer has touched many in Emil’s family, so this meant a lot to him.
“Sydney was an amazing experience: perfect weather, a beautiful course, and a perfect day. Finishing at the steps of the Sydney Opera House was a feeling that almost brought me to tears and I will remember it for a long time. Seeing my family cheer me on at the 40km mark gave me the final push I needed.”
“Thank you for the opportunity.”
A Team Effort to Remember
Together, our ABC runners in Sydney raised an amazing £23,617 for Against Breast Cancer’s research. All the while, honouring loved ones, and reminding us all of the power of running with purpose. From first marathons to seventh majors, their journeys inspired and uplifted.
We’re so proud of every one of them, and grateful to everyone who donated, supported, and cheered them along the way.
