Mandy and Emma Williams took part in the 2026 London Winter Walk on 24th January. Breast cancer has touched multiple members of this family and several close friends, making it a cause that is deeply personal and close to their hearts.
Fifteen years ago, Mandy was diagnosed with breast cancer. More recently, she tested positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation, which increases the risk of developing the disease again. Last year brought another difficult chapter when her husband was also diagnosed with breast cancer. A reminder that, although less common, men can be affected too. With the increased genetic risk now part of their family’s reality, it remains an ongoing worry that continues to have an impact on them all.
Mandy added to this saying that “a close family friend is currently undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed last year. Watching loved ones go through treatment reinforces just how vital research, support and awareness truly are.”
For them, taking part in the walk and fundraising for Against Breast Cancer felt like a meaningful way to channel their concern into something positive. It was an opportunity to raise money, raise awareness and feel part of something bigger than themselves.
Fundraising: Easier Than Expected
Like many first-time fundraisers, they were unsure how easy it would be to reach their target. However, they were pleasantly surprised.
“Setting up the fundraising page was straightforward. We received lots of support emails which encouraged us to raise our target.”
Their friends and family responded generously. Knowing how breast cancer had affected those closest to them, people were more than willing to contribute. They not only reached their original fundraising target but exceeded it, something they are incredibly proud of and deeply grateful for.
The Big Day

“Everyone was so welcoming. With a very easy registration process, and a fun warm-up session before we set off”, helped settle any remaining jitters they may have had. “With beautiful weather on our side and excellent organisation throughout, the event quickly became an enjoyable and memorable experience.”
Emma added that “one of the most special aspects of the day was meeting other walkers along the route. Each participant had their own story and reason for taking part, creating a strong sense of community and shared purpose. Walking through central London added another highlight. Seeing familiar landmarks from a fresh perspective while being surrounded by such positivity and support.”
With so many people taking part and such a friendly atmosphere, they truly felt like being part of something important.
Crossing the Finish Line
Completing the walk in four hours was a huge achievement for them both. Crossing the finish line to congratulations and receiving their medals was a proud and emotional moment.
“It wasn’t just about the miles completed; it was about what those miles represented.”
Looking Ahead
Grateful for the opportunity to share their story and support a cause that means so much to them, they are already planning their next challenge: a walking marathon next year to raise even more funds.
For this family, supporting breast cancer research isn’t just about one event. It’s personal, and they intend to continue doing what they can to make a difference.
From all of us at Against Breast Cancer, a massive thank you to Emma and Mandy for their support, determination, and for raising an incredible £695 to help our vital research.
