The historic village of West Wellow came alive as approximately 100 eager participants laced up for the annual Well Wellow 10K on Sunday 28th June. Held on a beautiful, slightly cooler than the recent heatwave afternoon, the community-driven fun run successfully raised vital funds for the national research charity, Against Breast Cancer.
The day kicked off with an inspiring opening speech by event co-organiser Karen Arney. She spoke passionately about the critical mission of Against Breast Cancer, a cause deeply connected to the heart of the local community. Her words set a poignant yet determined tone for the event, reminding everyone that every step taken through the village’s scenic trails would directly fund life-saving medical research.
As soon as the main event started the next generation of runners took centre stage. The highly anticipated children’s race followed the 10K and saw an incredible turnout, drawing a record-breaking number of young participants. The children’s energy brought immense joy to the crowds of cheering families and spectators gathered at the start line.
The scenic 10K course guided the 100 runners and walkers across the rural footpaths, country lanes, and mixed-terrain trails of the historic village. Though the temperature was slightly cooler the conditions for the participants were still challenging as they tackled the multi-terrain course. True to the spirit of the event, the focus remained firmly on fitness, community, and fresh air over intense competition.
Halfway through the gruelling route, participants were treated to a much-needed hydration station put on by local favourites, Foxford Vineyard—serving plenty of water, though perhaps a few runners playfully wished it was wine!
The immense success of the event relies entirely on the kindness of local businesses and residents. Organisers extend their deepest gratitude to:
Alex and Alex Danson-Bennett of Headlands Farm, who generously opened up their stunning, peaceful grounds to host the event for the fourth consecutive year.
Foxford Vineyard, Nobles Stores, Wellow Review Hair Salon, Mike of Country Consumables, New Forest Butchers, Headlands Farm and Hazel Hickson for their incredibly generous donations toward the day’s raffle prizes.
Huge thanks from Against Breast Cancer to the organisers, volunteers, sponsors, and of course the participants. If you are feeling inspired to get active, why not check out how you can get involved by visiting our events page.
